Dr. Neal Baer, Executive Producer of "Law & Order: SVU" and Viacom Will Receive Top Honors at the 19th Annual Shine Awards
The 2003 SHINE (Sexual Health IN Entertainment) Awards honoring TV writers and producers for positive portrayals of sexuality and reproductive health issues, will take place on October 18th at the House of Blues. The gala is sponsored by The Media Project, a program of Advocates for Youth in Washington, D.C.
According to Robin Smalley, The Media Project's Director, "The Special Achievement Awards acknowledge outstanding contributions to programming that normalize healthy behaviors and convey accurate sexual health information. The media has enormous power and the winners of the Awards have harnessed that power to save lives."
A Harvard educated physician, Neal Baer has successfully merged the two worlds of medicine and entertainment. As the former executive producer of "ER" and the current helmer of "Law & Order: SVU," Smalley says, "Neal has consistently tackled controversial topics with integrity and fearlessness, educating people about topics from sexually transmitted diseases to rape while entertaining them with great characters and beautifully written storylines."
Media powerhouse Viacom has partnered with the Kaiser Family Foundation to create a comprehensive campaign designed to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. Chairman and CEO Sumner M. Redstone will be on hand to accept the Special Corporate Achievement Award for Viacom's unprecedented and extraordinary campaign.. The Initiative, "KNOW HIV/AIDS," encompasses the entire Viacom family including CBS, UPN, Showtime, Paramount Television, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Blockbuster and incorporates TV programming that encourages HIV prevention, testing and counseling as well as public service announcements, and print and outdoor advertising. Comments Redstone, "This honor adds to our resolve and confidence to continue to do our part in the fight against HIV/AIDS."
