SHINE Awards to Celebrate 20 Years of Safer Sex TV

HBO Films to Receive Highest Honor

(LOS ANGELES, CA)—The Media Project will host its 20th annual SHINE (Sexual Health in Entertainment) Awards on Saturday, October 16th at the House of Blues, Sunset Strip.

The only recognition of its kind, the SHINE Awards honors nationally and internationally televised films and episodic programs for accurate and honest portrayals of adolescent sexual health issues. The CBS network leads with seven nominations this year. That ‘70s Show joins four other shows in the popular “Scene Stealer” category. Perennial SHINE honorees ER, Law and Order: SVU and Queer as Folk also make appearances on the list of nominees. Other categories include Drama, Daytime Drama, Comedy, Documentary, and Latino programming.

"It was especially exciting this year—on the 20th anniversary of the awards—to have the work of so many of the networks, as well as a great number of the cable stations, recognized with SHINE Awards nominations," said Melissa Havard, Director of The Media Project. "It is extremely encouraging, particularly in today's environment, knowing that the television community understands that depicting healthy sexual behavior can be the norm and still offer plenty of entertainment value.”

This year, HBO Films will receive the Corporate Special Achievement Award, given for exceptional commitment to integrating responsible messages into programming. Senior Vice President Keri Putnam will accept at the luncheon ceremony.

“HBO has produced some of the most powerful, courageous, and innovative entertainment specials and documentaries dealing with sexual health issues. It is so deserving of our Corporate Special Achievement Award,” said Havard.

In 2002, The SHINE Awards welcomed Spanish language and Latino themed programming into their nomination categories. The wide range of networks recognized in this year’s Latino programming categories include: Univision, Telemundo, TV Azteca, Telefutura, Si TV, MUN2, Televisa, TVN Chile, RCN TV, and Invento TV. This year will mark the introduction of a Special Latino Award which will go to Puertas Abiertas, Puntos de Encuentro-Canal 2 Nicaragua for their outstanding body of work.

Individual VIP seating at the SHINE Awards is available for a $150 tax-deductible donation, with all proceeds from the event benefiting Advocates for Youth’s work to help adolescents make responsible and healthy decisions about sex. For tickets or more information, phone 310.234.0454 or visit www.themediaproject.com.

The Media Project—a part of Advocates for Youth—offers entertainment professionals the latest facts, research assistance, and script consultation on all of today’s sexual and reproductive health issues. Last year alone, the Project was directly responsible for helping the entertainment industry provide accurate sexual health content and relevant story lines to more than 30 million Americans.
