Scott Clifton & Lindze Leatherman, GH’s Leading Star-Crossed, Sex Starved Sweethearts to Present at 20th Annual SHINE Awards
Soaps Shine with Safer Sex TV
(LOS ANGELES, CA)—A record number of submissions for the annual SHINE (Sexual Health IN Entertainment) Awards make the Daytime Drama division more thrilling than ever. Finalists for this category include The Young and the Restless, One Life to Live and General Hospital. The Young and the Restless addresses the dangers of internet encounters when Lily meets an older man in a chat room and is seduced. In One Life to Live, deeply religious Adriana debates whether or not to initiate sex with her fiancé, and in General Hospital, Dillon and Georgie have been trying unsuccessfully to have sex since the SHINE 03 Awards! The two stars will be presenters at this year’s event on October 16, at House of Blues, Sunset Strip.
The only recognition of its kind, the SHINE Awards honors nationally and internationally televised and episodic programming for accurate and honest portrayals of sexual and reproductive health issues.
Actress/Writer Julie Brown (Clueless, Earth Girls are Easy) will host this special 20th anniversary celebration, bringing her comedic talent and sharp eye for youth culture to the luncheon ceremony.
“As the mother of a child about to enter his teen years, I am very aware of the amount of information and content coming at him,” said Brown. I support and am really grateful to efforts by my colleagues in the creative community to include safer sex messages in their storylines."
Also honored this year is HBO Films, recipient of the 2004 Corporate Special Achievement Award. “Whether the topic is AIDS, reproductive choice, or sexual orientation, HBO Films has always been cutting edge” said Melissa Havard, Director of the Media Project. “How could we not honor HBO Films on our special anniversary?”
In 2002, The SHINE Awards welcomed Spanish language novelas in the Latino Broadcast Novela/Series category. This year will mark the introduction of a Special Latino Award which will go to Puertas Abiertas, Puntos de Encuentro-Canal 2 Nicaragua for its outstanding body of work.
Individual VIP seating at the SHINE Awards on October 16 at House of Blues, Sunset Strip is available for a $150 tax-deductible donation, with all proceeds from the event benefiting Advocates for Youth’s work to help adolescents make responsible and healthy decisions about sex.
