Los Angeles—
Today, the Media Project announced the winners of the 2002 SHINE Awards for Sexual Health IN Entertainment. The Awards, honoring outstanding television portrayals of sexual and reproductive health issues, went to shows airing almost exclusively on cable networks. Showtime and Lifetime each garnered two awards with HBO taking the top honors for Comedy Episode, Showtime for Drama Episode and Entertainment Special and Lifetime for Series Storyline and Scene Stealer. "Many of this year's nominated shows are credited with tackling particularly sensitive topics, from abortion to HIV/AIDS to oral sex to coming out," said Robin Smalley, Director, the Media Project. "It is wonderful that the television community can present important sexual health information without compromising on entertainment value. We applaud the cable networks in particular for taking some real risks this past year."

The theme of this year's SHINE Awards was communication—communication between young people, between partners and between parents and kids. Hosted by one of FOX's star dads, Donal Logue ("Grounded for Life"), the event took place at the House of Blues on Saturday, October 19.

This year two categories were added to recognize the importance of Spanish language shows, "Spanish Language Novela" and "Spanish Language Talk/Variety Show."

"Television has the power to communicate critical information about sexual health," continued Smalley. "We are delighted this year to include and acknowledge the tremendous effort being made by Spanish language programs to present their viewers with life-saving information about sexual health, healthy relationships, and good parental role models."

We look forward to seeing lots of potential nominees for next year's awards."
