Kids in America
Opening Oct 21, 2005, in over 500 theatres around the country, Kids in America was inspired by true events. This comedy/drama film depicts a diverse group of students who are tired of their freedoms being censored. Attending fictional Booker High School, the students band together to change their world by working to protect freedom of expression and speech. Holden Donovan (Gregory Smith) is fed up with Principal Weller (Julie Bowen), who goes to great lengths to stop the students from exercising their right to free speech.
Even as she expels a young woman for passing out condoms and for advocating safer sex on national "safer sex" day, she is also running for the position of superintendent of the school district. Winning will give her a chance to practice her brand of administration beyond Booker High School. The students have an ally in one of their teachers, Mr. Drucker (Malik Yoba), who encourages them to fight for their rights. He pays a price for his leadership—being fired by Principal Weller—and decides to use his dismissal to make changes of his own, producing a documentary on the experiences of students faced with similar issues.
The Media Project supports the theme and message of this film and encourages viewing audiences to check it out at their local theatres.
